We hope you had a happy holiday! We’re back in full swing today at All Terrain. Actually, it’s more like half swing. I think some of us are still shaking the calm of an extended weekend. But we’re here, nonetheless.
During a family party this weekend, we found ourselves parked in front of an HD yule log. You know the ones. Fake fireplace DVD loop playing on a flat panel. Typically supplemented by some cheesy, synthy Christmas music. Nothing warms the soul and stokes the spirit quite like the glowing embers of someone else’s fireplace… on video.

Did you know that the first yule log loop was first broadcast in 1966? HD aside, nothing has come along to freshen up the novelty in the last 45 years.
Until now.
This is really quite brilliant: A guy named Ted Martens has created a classically pixelated 8-bit interactive yule log for your computer. It’s a free download for Windows or Mac, though donations are encouraged.
Once it’s running, you have to type “log” to produce the log and “match” to light ‘er up. From there, typing any number of commands will trigger some pretty nifty interactions. For instance, we just typed “roast marshmallow” and sure enough:

Other suggested commands include smore, eat, hotdog, fireworks, photo, paper and water. Each log is programmed to burn for 30 minutes. It’s definitely worth the download!
Heck, it warmed us up more than this ever will:
