Memphis BBQ Trip

A lot of people watch the Food Network Channel but how many people actually get in their cars and drive 9 hours to get the food??? Well, we did!

After watching all about the famous BBQ in Memphis, TN, my boyfriend and I really wanted to go to Memphis and try it. Then we saw an episode that had Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken and we got in the car that Saturday and started driving.

First stop: Jim Neely’s Interstate BBQ. We got the sampler platter and the pork ribs were amazing. If you haven’t had BBQ spaghetti before, it’s time. Then we arrived at the Peabody Hotel, famous for the Duck March into the fountain. Nap time. Awake around 9:00 p.m., get ready and head off to Rendezvous for more BBQ. Now this is a different kind of BBQ, dry rub. It was really good. Their hot sauce is excellent. Then we took a tour down to the famous Beale Street. Home of Blues and BBQ. They shut down the street and thousands of people gather to drink, eat and listen to music. We stopped at a few places but we were on a mission. Around midnight we made our way over to Dyer’s Burgers. These aren’t just ordinary burgers, they are fried burgers. Fried in 100 year old oil that they have been using since the place opened. We had two! The next morning we had breakfast at Miss Polly’s Soul Food Café then headed off to Graceland. After a quick tour though the mansion we were back to the BBQ. Stopped at Pig on Beale (Pig with attitude) and got ribs to go and a pulled pork sandwich. We bought a cooler and some ice to bring the ribs back, the pork we devoured on our way to Gus’s. Well, it is the BEST fried chicken in the whole world, well that I have had anyway. Their fried green tomatoes were really good as well. Took that to go and headed back on the road for another 9 hour trip back to Chicago.

So, in case your holiday plans aren’t already filled with family & friend BBQs, why not head down to Memphis for a gut-busting trip full of delicious food. 9 hours is plenty of time to let your food digest.

Happy Memorial Day!
